The Portuguese capital is an excellent gateway to the entire country.
With stunning views, a river that tells the story of the Portuguese Discoveries, and a rich gastronomy, the City of Seven Hills is one of Europe’s treasures that deserves a visit—its beauty is beyond words. Explore our 2-day itinerary for a quick stay in Lisbon:
DAY 1
Start your journey at Rossio Square, featuring several terraces and a view of São Jorge Castle. Beneath its Portuguese pavement lies a rich history, and the square is home to the National Theatre Dona Maria II, which previously served as the headquarters of the Portuguese Inquisition before becoming a national hub for the arts.
On foot or by tram 28, head to Praça da Figueira and make your way up to São Jorge Castle, where you can admire the city from a new perspective. Prepare for an uphill walk, but once there, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Tagus River, the southern bank, and even the Christ the King statue in Almada. Nearby is the Alfama district, one of Lisbon’s most traditional and picturesque neighborhoods. Here, Fado music and neighborly camaraderie preserve the essence of its past, making it a postcard-perfect area of the city.
DAY 2
Return to the city center to ride the Santa Justa Lift, offering yet another unique angle of Lisbon’s fantastic views. It leads to the Chiado district, where you can shop in both traditional and modern stores. Nearby lies Carmo Convent, whose historical ruins are worth exploring.
In the same area is Chiado Square, home to the famous café A Brasileira, known for its statue of Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa—a perfect spot for a photo!
If you continue downhill, you’ll pass through the city’s main street, Rua Augusta, which features the beautiful Arco da Rua Augusta. From here, you can catch tram 15 to Belém to enjoy a Pastel de Belém and explore the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, and the Monument to the Discoveries, a tribute to Portugal’s maritime heritage.
